WTS Perspective

Anna was an anxious four-year old whose parents were desperately searching for an explanation to their daughter’s difficulties. Anna had great difficulty socializing, trouble keeping up with other children and would sit on the sidelines in preschool, birthday parties and playgrounds with a grim look on her face while other children played. Neither her pediatrician nor her teacher had an answer. After searching online, Anna’s mother learned about symptoms of sensory sensitivity and low muscle strength which led her to Westchester Therapy Solutions and Donna Klein. She began to understand the reasons for her daughter appearing overwhelmed at times, avoiding play and having a low frustration tolerance. Several months later, after weekly Occupational Therapy services with a highly skilled warm therapist, Anna blossomed. Her mother described Anna as “empowered,” eager to play with friends and demonstrating a confidence she never had before. The therapist at Westchester Therapy Solutions recognized that Anna had difficulties with sensory processing and the ability to learn new motor tasks. Over the course of six months of therapy, Anna successfully overcame her anxiety and she began to seek out and enjoy challenges.

Parents of children with special needs often find it difficult learning precisely what their child’s particular needs are, what services can help them compensate for any deficits, and which professionals can best deliver the appropriate therapy. What’s more, today many families are denied necessary services, receive insufficient therapy, or find their child is not making the gains in therapy they are anxious to see. Skilled therapy services that target core deficits can change a child’s developmental trajectory and dramatically raise their quality of life. Improvements in a child’s behavior, competence and self-esteem should be clearly observed by a parent within 6-8 therapy sessions.
